It’s that time again.
Today is the day you see if all the brushing and flossing has paid off in a no-cavity checkup. But let’s be honest. You missed brushing twice a day at least once or twice right? And if we were confessing our sins to the hygienist, you know you didn’t floss once a day.
What’s the big deal anyway? Why is it so important to brush twice daily?

The benefits of twice daily brushing.
You can’t see them, but there are millions and millions of bacteria that live inside your mouth. These happy bacteria multiply like crazy, doubling every 5 hours! You can have up to 100 million living bacteria in your mouth in 24 hours.
Why should you care about bacteria?
The bacteria in your mouth are the cause of cavities and gum disease. If you’re like most people, these are conditions you want to avoid at all costs. Let’s be frank, nobody likes the sound of the dental drill ringing in their ears.
So why brush twice a day. The reason is that the bacteria multiply so quickly. Brushing your teeth once a day isn’t enough to get rid of the bacteria fast enough. By brushing twice a day, once in the morning, and once before bed time, you will reduce the amount of tartar build up making your regular dental cleanings easier resulting in healthier gums.
What’s so important about gum tissue?
Your gums help support and protect your teeth. Ignoring your gums by not brushing, flossing and getting regular cleanings can result in periodontal disease. In some cases, teeth can become loose and fall out, even without ever having a cavity.
Think about good dental hygiene like preventive maintenance. The better you clean your teeth, the less time in the dentist’s chair.
I’ve tried brushing in the morning and before bed, but I just can’t make it a habit.
I know that not everyone can keep the same timing and habits. We all have different schedules, morning routines and if you’ve got kids to get ready for school, you can easily forget to take care of yourself.
If this is you, take a toothbrush to work. If you have a desk, keep one in a travel case and brush after your morning coffee break. Or if you work construction, have a toothbrush handy in your lunch kit and brush before you start the day or at a scheduled break.
The same thing goes at night. If you always forget because of your kid’s bedtime routine, or you’re too tired, brush and floss after your last meal. This way you never have to worry about forgetting to brush.
