What is a dental implant?
- On August 22, 2018
A dental implant is a great alternative for replacing missing teeth. A titanium post is surgically implanted into your jawbone beneath the gums. The post serves as the mount for a replacement tooth or as a mount for dentures or bridge. When taken care of, a dental implant can last your whole life.
Is a dental implant right for me?
Because dental implants become part of your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, they are more stable than conventional dentures or bridges which can slip or shift while eating or talking.
Ordinary dentures can be very uncomfortable and cause pain and soreness and gagging for some people. Conventional bridges must be anchored to adjacent teeth for support. With a dental implant no adjacent teeth need to be ground down to hold a bridge in place.
To be a good candidate for a dental implant you should consult your dentist. They will check on the health of your gums and make sure there is adequate bone in place to receive the implant.
When should I consider dental implants?
Dental implants are a great alternative to missing teeth, but they are more costly than conventional dentures and bridges.
Here are some questions when you are considering dental implants:
- Are you satisfied with the fit and feel of your bridge or denture?
- Do you hide your smile or avoid smiling because of missing teeth or you don’t like the look of your smile?
- Do you find it difficult to eat or talk because of your dentures or bridge?
- Do you want a more natural looking smile?
